Why the federal government is switching to cloud solutions

The Cloud Enabling Office Automation project is introducing "Microsoft 365", the cloud version of Microsoft services, as the new standard in the federal administration.
 

The Swiss Confederation has decided to switch to cloud-based solutions, specifically Microsoft 365, in order to drive forward the modernization of its IT infrastructure and support the digital transformation. This decision will enable the federal administration to benefit from the latest technological developments and improved integration of services. It will also increase flexibility and boost the efficiency of administrative processes while reducing dependence on outdated systems. The use of cloud solutions therefore makes a significant contribution to optimizing and securing the future of the federal administration.

Which Microsoft 365 functions are being introduced?

Subsequent Microsoft 365 products and services will be introduced:
 
  • Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote.
    These applications are available locally installed on the workstation, but also web-based via the browser. If documents are created in GEVER (the federal administration's business management application and central data repository) or in the specialist applications or opened from there, this is also done locally on the workstation with Office365 as before. This is particularly relevant when dealing with CONFIDENTIALLY classified data. The emails and personal calendars of the Federal Administration will continue to be processed and stored by the Confederation itself and on site in the federal data centers ("on premise").
  • Microsoft Teams for collaboration and web conferencing.
    probably still without a connection to the public telephone network. Skype for Business will continue to operate in parallel for the time being. In the medium term, only one application will be used. Clarifications on this are currently underway outside of the CEBA project.
  • SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business
  • Productivity apps such as Planner, Tasks, Form, Viva Engage and more.
